Job Racing Finishes
Seventh in GT2 at Portland
Portland,
Oregon – Alex
Job Racing finished seventh in this evening’s running of
the Grand Prix of Portland and round six of the American Le Mans
Series.
New comer Robin
Liddell started the number 23/Alex Job Racing/Bell Microproducts/Porsche
911 RSR from the second row in GT2. The
Festival Turns lived up to their reputation of causing havoc on
the first turn of the race. Liddell was positioning himself
for the first turn with little room to maneuver when one of the
BMWs came across his bow forcing him into the back of the Ferrari. Under
heavy braking the Scot got the Porsche sideways. In the melee
he was shuffled to the back of the pack, but was able to claw his
way into fifth before turning over to Mike Rockenfeller.
Rockenfeller
proceeded to bring the AJR number 23 back up to third position. During the ladder part of his stint the rubber
bits deposited on the track accumulated on the Michelin’s
affecting lap times. With less than 20-minutes remaining
the young German had to pit for a splash of fuel and also took
tires to try and keep a top five finish. A strong vibration
in the left rear caused Rockenfeller to return to pit road for
a new tire sealing the team’s fate in seventh.
Mike Rockenfeller
had a lot of trouble with track debris. “Robin
had a tough start and I got into the car in fifth place. I
was able to get back up to the top three but as the race went on
the pick-up [track debris] on the tires made it difficult to improve
my position. We had to pit late for a splash and I took new
tires to try and hold a top five position, but then we had a big
vibration in the left rear and I had to return to pit road for
another tire, knocking us back down the order.”
Robin Liddell
experienced the infamous Festival Turns first lap bottle-neck. “When the green flew I was headed into turn
one and the Ferrari was squeezing the 31 to the wall and the BMW
was along side me. When we got to the turn-in everyone checked-up
and then the BMW came across my nose and left me no room, I tapped
him and got into the brakes which turned me sideways and relegated
me to the back of the field. I was able to get back into
the top five within 10 laps, but the lead cars were out of reach. The
start was disappointing as was the finish.”
“We have had another very difficult race,” said Holly
Job, team owner. “We battled grip issues all through
practice and then put in the fastest time today for the warm-up,
thinking we would have a good car for the race. Robin’s
first turn incident was bad luck with the congestion and stacking
affect, which is typical where the GT2 cars start. The track
was littered with rubber making fast lap times impossible. The
Ferrari pitted out of sequence and had a big off and still was
able to win – we could have used a little of that luck today.”
The bright spot of the weekend was that the Alex Job Racing crew
consisting of Kerry Foote, Greg Fordahl, Hugh Goshop, Jim Justice,
Richard Westfall, Pat Fraccalvieri, Alison Dunn, Mike Spinti, Johnny
Massuet, Bill Braucksick, Jack Bromall and Mike Spinti took home
the $10,000 Klien Tool Pit Stop Challenge award besting the likes
of Audi Sport, Corvette Racing, BMW Team PTG, Aston Martin Racing,
Intersport and Petersen White Lightning.
Round seven of the American Le Mans Series will be run at Road
America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin on August 20th.
