AUSTIN, Texas - Sebastian Landy (Great Falls, Va.) put together two solid races - finishing sixth in race one and fourth in race two - in the No.49 Porsche 911 GT in the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama doubleheader at Circuit of The Americas.
Landy's weekend did not start the way he wanted it when he qualified eighth for the first of two Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge races. In race one, Landy managed to come out of a couple of first laps incidents unscathed. This helped him advance a few positions. From there, Landy looked for the right opportunity to make a move into the top three. But, a mistake on the last lap saw him drop from fourth to sixth.
"It's been a tricky weekend here for us," Landy said. "We've been struggling a little bit. We've just been a little off the leaders and that's enough when you put it together over a whole lap - having to start eighth and seventh - which is not where we wanted to start. But, the guys at Alex Job Racing gave me a great car and it lasted the whole way through the race.
"It [the start of the first race] was a little bit chaotic. There were a couple incidents that went on at the start. I was able to advance a couple of spots. I'm not sure how many. I was biding my time and tried to take opportunities as they fell. It's not easy to pass here. It's a lot of rhythm - so trying to string together a lap to take advantage of someone's mistakes is tricky. And then, I made a mistake in the last two corners, which happens. It's unfortunate. But, I finished sixth.
In the second race, Landy started seventh on the grid and spent most of his race in sixth. On lap 14 of the 19 lap race, Landy passed McKay Snow heading into Turn 15 and made it stick for fifth place. But, Landy wasn't done. On the final lap, Landy pulled alongside Anthony Imperato coming down the front straight and completed the pass climbing up the hill into Turn One. This move helped Landy score a fourth place finish.
"I was able to keep it clean at the start. From there on, it was about putting in consistent laps, taking care of the tires, and making moves where I could. I knew I was quicker than McKay, but I didn't really know where I could make a move on him. I was hoping I could force something. I know we had a little bit of a get together at Barber. So, I was happy to find a spot by [him] where I could give him as much room as possible. And, at the same time, have really good racing.
"On the last lap, I passed Imperato. This is the second time I've had a last lap pass here. I did the same thing last year in kind of a similar spot. I had to keep the pressure on them - forcing them to make a mistake. I was fortunate they did because I was working my butt off to make them do that. It was a good run considering everything we've had this weekend. I think it's great. It's a good result."
Team owner Alex Job likes the effort Landy put forth his weekend.
"Sebastian has been busy the last couple weeks with a race at Barber and taking care of his school responsibilities," Job said. "In race one he was putting together a good run when a little youthful enthusiasm got the best of him into the last turn. On Sunday he put it altogether for a solid fourth place finish. We needed a little better starting position to be a part of the front three car pack, but he will get there."
The IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama series heads east to Watkins Glen International June 29 - July 2 for the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen.
