AJR Finishes Second and Seventh at Mid-Ohio
Lexington,
Ohio -- Alex Job Racing over came car issues and a spin to finish
their McKenna/mail2web/Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 RSRs in second
and seventh in today's round two of the American Le Mans Series
race at the Mid-Ohio Sportscar Course.
Timo
Bernhard, in the number 23 AJR Porsche, lead the first 55 laps with
nearly a four second gap to his nearest pursuer. A yellow flag came
out as a result of teammate Marc Lieb having contact with the Ferrari
and ending up in the turn three gravel trap. Lieb then pitted when
the pits were not open which resulted in a further one-minute-fifteen
second penalty putting the car down a total of four laps.
The
tough luck was not over for the Florida based team. Jorg Bergmeister
took over driving duties for Bernhard falling to second place in
pit lane. Bergmeister then began to chase the Flying Lizard and
was in three seconds, then on lap 55 he started to get a flickering
fuel light and the car began to misfire. Jorg and the team took
the cautious approach and pitted to fill the 911 GT3RSR instead
of risking the car being stranded on the circuit sealing their second
place finish.
Romain
Dumas, after serving the penalty for pitting early, began to put
in consistent laps hoping for luck to turn and move up the finishing
order. He had to pit late in the race for a splash of fuel taking
him down one more lap.
Timo
Bernhard, #23 McKenna/mail2web/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR:
"We had a really fast car today. I lead the first quarter of
the race without any real problems until the fuel light began flicker.
Jorg made a good decision to pit and refuel the car as we are looking
to the championship and even though it is June we still have eight
races remaining."
Jorg
Bergmeister, #23 McKenna/mail2web/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3
RSR: "Fuel issues! After falling behind the Flying Lizard car
in the pits I was catching him and was in three-seconds when the
car began to miss. I had to be safe and pit the car for fuel. This
put us back nearly a lap and there was no time to chase down the
leader."
Romain
Dumas, #24 McKenna/mail2web/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR:
"A couple of mistakes cost made for a tough race. In the short
races there is no real room for error. Marc and I are new with the
team and the tracks so we are learning and this is a tough lesson.
The car was good even though it came out of the gravel trap. I was
able to put in consistent race laps, but did not have time to make
up any ground."
Marc
Lieb, #24 McKenna/mail2web/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR:
"I was battling with the shifter in the car. I really had to
concentrate on getting the car into gear, this cost some tenths
in lap times. I let the Ferrari go by and then I caught him again
at the end of the straight and tried to follow a prototype and pass,
but I ended up hitting him and landing in the gravel. We then had
to pit or we would have been spreading gravel around the track.
I am glad Lime Rock is only four days away so we can start new."
Alex
Job, team owner: "Another second at Mid-Ohio. Timo did a good
job leading for the first part of the race and then the fuel concerns
began. It was a heads-up move to pit the car, that shows they have
a plan for the championship. We knew that Flying Lizard was going
to splash and not take tires, which they did and that kept the gap.
Marc had a tough day with the spin into the gravel and then pitting
when pit lane was closed. We had to pit Romain at the end for a
splash or we may have crawled back to fifth with that car."
Round
three of the American Le Mans Series will be July 5 at Lime Rock
Park.
