AJR Finishes First
and Fourth in GT at Portland
Portland, Oregon
-- Alex Job Racing driver's Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas recorded
their first career victory in the American Le Mans Series race today
at Portland Raceway.
Starting from
pole position, his third in a row, Romain Dumas led the first seventeen
laps before he was forced onto the dirty part of the track by Lucas
Luhr who was followed past the French driver by David Murry relegating
him to third. Marc Lieb took over on lap 36 and had the number 23/
McKenna/mail2web.com/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR back in
the lead by lap 73. The team decided to pit the car early because
a vibration was causing Lieb tolose time on the track. Dumas returned
to the driver's seat on lap 90 in fifth position and worked his
way through the field finally making the pass for the lead on lap
119.
The number 23
AJR Porsche had a much different race. Jorg Bergmeister started
the car from second place on the GT grid and was a victim of the
infamous Portland first lap Festival curves carnage. The German
was hit from behind causing the Porsche's right rear tail pipe to
bend almost 30-degrees. This affected the cars straight line speed
for the remainder of the race. Handing over to teammate Timo Bernhard
on lap 36, he was able to actually lead the race until he was forced
to pit for fuel and tires. An additional late race pit stop for
a left rear flat tire sealed fourth place for the 23 car.
Romain Dumas,
#24 McKenna/mail2web.com/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR: "I
had a good start and then was forced up into the marbles allowing
Luhr and Murry passed me. Marc did a great job today and the AJR
Porsche ran flawlessly the whole race. The team had a great plan
for the race and we were hungry for our first win. In the end when
I passed the Peterson car I just had to conserve and bring it home
for our first win, it is great!"
Marc Lieb, #24
McKenna/mail2web.com/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR: "Everything
was perfect today. After our last three races we finally got the
luck. I had a little problem early on and was losing some time on
the track with a vibration, so it was a good call by the crew to
bring me in. Romain and I really drove a smart race and the team
kept us in a position to win with the strategy. It is great to get
our first win in only our fifth race together."
Timo Bernhard,
#23 McKenna/mail2web.com/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR: "We
were hit twice and then I spun once. It was a tough day for Jorg
and I, the car was a little down on power and it also affected the
handling in the late going. The car was pushing and we were pushing
the car to try and make-up ground, just a tough day all around."
Jorg Bergmeister,
#23 McKenna/mail2web.com/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR: "I
am not sure what we did wrong. We fell victim to the errors of our
competitors. I think our car had a bulls-eye painted on the back.
When I was hit on the first lap, it really bent the exhaust pipe
and you could feel the difference going down the straight. Timo
and I did the best we could, so a fourth place today for us is not
really that bad."
Alex Job, team
owner: "We decided to pit the 24 car a little early the second
time as we were losing ground on the track. The fresh tires and
fresh driver kept us in contention for the win. Our two rookies
are really doing a good job. The crew has really stepped up on the
pit stops; we were able to supply some breathing room to the drivers
on the track as a result of our excellent pit work today. It is
disappointing to be hit by the 31 car two races in a row, last week
it was the 24 car, this week I guess it was the 23 cars turn. The
points chase is getting really close; Romain and Marc are making
a legitimate run for the championship."
Round six of
the American Le Mans Series will be run on Sunday, August 8th at
Canada's Mosport International Raceway.
