AJR Wins GT at Road America
Elkhart
Lake, Wisconsin -- Alex Job Racing won their fifth GT race in a
row today with the driving duo of Jorg Bergmeister and Timo Bernhard
piloting their number 23/McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex Job
Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR to victory in round seven of the American
Le Mans Series race. Teammates Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb had a
tough day finishing in tenth place.
The
two AJR Porsches started from the front row of the GT grid and ran
in lock-step for the first nine laps of the two-hour and forty-five
minute race. On lap nine, while leading, Jorg Bergmeister hit some
dirt brought onto the track by another competitor and went a little
too far into the braking zone allowing teammate Marc Lieb to take
the lead. Fourteen laps later Lieb was exiting turn one when a left
side lower control arm broke, sending the car into a spin. The young
German was able to limp the car back almost three miles to pit lane
for repairs.
Following
the Lieb spin, Bergmeister took back the lead and began to put distance
between himself and second place. On lap 35, Timo Bernhard took
over the number 23 car and never looked back, lapping almost a half-second
faster than his nearest pursuer taking the car to victory lane.
The
number 24 car returned to the race with Romain Dumas at the wheel
only to retire on lap 66 with a clutch failure. During his stint
Dumas managed to set the fastest GT lap of the race.
This
victory puts Bernhard in the overall driver's GT class points lead
by three heading into Petit Le Mans.
Timo
Bernhard, #23 McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex Job Racing/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: "The car was just great. It was very easy to drive
fast around here and the length of the circuit helps reduce the
traffic so you can do fast laps. Jorg did a great job to put the
car in the lead and get a nice gap for the pit stop. It is a credit
to the team that I am able to be back in the driver's points lead.
It was a great day and it gives us some good momentum going into
Petit Le Mans."
Jorg
Bergmeister, #23 McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex Job Racing/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: "I was leading and then went too deep into the
turn and the rear tires locked up, I think there was some dirt on
the track. That was really our only little mistake today. The car
was fantastic, the crew had great pit stops. Timo is now in the
driver's points lead and I will help support his run for the championship."
Romain
Dumas, #24 McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex Job Racing/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: "Our poor luck continues. Marc and I have been
fast all weekend like we were at Mosport, but we just cannot get
a break. When I got into the car it was pretty good after the control
arm repair and then the shifting became difficult with the clutch
and that is what ended our day early. Both Marc and I have raced
at Road Atlanta so I am looking for better things there next month."
Marc
Lieb, #24 McKenna/mail2web.com/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR:
"I was running great in the lead, the car was very good. I
was exiting turn one and then the car just sat down on the tire
and I spun. The lower control arm broke and it was just poor luck.
The team really works hard to give us a good car and Romain and
I have been fast. We just need a couple of breaks."
Alex
Job, team owner: "Jorg and Timo did a great job today. The
team is really coming together after we had a few mishaps after
Sebring. That can probably be attributed to a little rust setting
in as a result of being idle for almost three months. Marc and Romain
have been very fast every session. Marc was leading and we had a
part failure, something that is very unusual for the Porsche. Timo
is now in the lead in the championship and we are looking forward
to Petit Le Mans next month."
Round
eight of the American Le Mans Series will be September 25th at Road
Atlanta.
