AJR Looking for Three-Peat at Petit
Tavares,
Florida -- Alex Job Racing will be looking for their third Petit
win in a row in round eight of the American Le Mans Series race
to be run on September 25th at Road Atlanta. The Florida based team
has won the 10-hour Petit Le Mans in 2003, 2002 and 1999.
The
team has come off of a grueling six races in ten-weeks for a chance
to prepare the McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex Job Racing/Porsche
911 GT3 RSRs for the 1000 km race to be run at the 2.54-mile, 12-turn
Georgia road course. "We have been able to field competitive
cars at Petit every year," said Alex Job, team owner. "This
year can be no different. We are locked in a tight GT points battle
that we have not seen at this point in the season since the ALMS
series started. We have a chance to win Timo the championship at
Petit, he has to come away with 24 points. With Laguna finishing
in the darkness for the first time ever, this is a wild card, so
we want to try and take care of business at Petit."
Timo
Bernhard and teammate Jorg Bergmeister, drivers of the number 23
AJR Porsche, are ready for the 10-hour event. "Theoretically,
I could win the championship if the number 45 Flying Lizard car
does not finish. But they have run so consistently over the year
that I honestly think it'll go to a show down at Laguna. My goal
is to win the championship and we are well prepared." Long
time AJR pilot Sascha Maassen will join the 23 duo at Petit. "Everything
is a little more relaxed when you have a third driver, you're physically
not on the limit. Having Sascha is a very good opportunity. He has
a lot of experience in a Porsche and knows the team and the track
very well. He definitely helps my chances for the driver's championship,"
continued Bernhard.
Sascha
Maassen is looking forward to helping Bernhard race for the title
in the number 23 car. "The ALMS GT Championship has never been
a closer fight. This makes the GT class the most exciting class
in the field, I wish I was in the thick of it. I am hoping to support
Timo in his bid for the championship by making no mistakes. I always
look forward to racing at Road Atlanta. I love turn five, it's a
left hand corner with an elevation change with at least two different
kinds of tarmac and curbs to be used at entry and exit."
Marc
Lieb, Romain Dumas and Wolf Henzler will pilot the number 24 AJR
Porsche. Lieb and Dumas have both raced at Road Atlanta before,
Henzler is new to the Georgia circuit. "Romain and I have both
raced Petit before, so this should be a good opportunity for us
to get our second win of '04," said Lieb. "It will be
nice to do some testing with the team as we haven't had that opportunity
yet this year. The test will also help Wolf get up to speed with
the team and learn the track. My favorite part of the circuit is
coming down the hill into the last turn, you are almost flat out
through there - nice!"
The
team will have its first opportunity of the year to do some testing
at Road Atlanta. "We will test on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
prior to the race week. This should definitely help us in our chase
for the title," continued Job.
AJR
driver Timo Bernhard currently leads the driver's points standings
with 113. To secure the title, Bernhard and teammates will have
to come away from Petit with a 24 point advantage. Alex Job Racing
can clinch the ALMS GT team standings by finishing one car ahead
of the pursuing second place Porsche team.
