Alex Job Racing Wins GT at Laguna Seca – Bernhard
Champion
Monterey,
California -- Alex Job Racing drivers Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas
snatched the GT victory today in their number 24/McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex
Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR at Laguna Seca in the final round
of the American Le Mans Series. The number 23 AJR Porsche driven
by Timo Bernhard and Jorg Bergmeister finished in a close second,
winning Bernhard the series driver’s championship.
From
the drop of the green flag Timo Bernhard asserted himself as the
driver to beat, setting fastest race lap early and leading most
of the race. Teammate Jorg Bergmeister was able to keep the gap
to the second place team car driven by Dumas and Lieb. The two AJR
Porsches ran trouble free in first and second place, putting a lap
on the third place GT car about two hours into the race.
In
the final twenty-minutes of the four hour event in darkness it began
to rain. Bernhard was near pit lane when the rain came and pitted
for wet tires immediately, wanting to play it safe for the championship.
During his pit stop a full course yellow came out and this put the
24 AJR car into the lead allowing Marc Lieb to pit under yellow
and keeping his lead for the win.
Timo
Bernhard with his second place wins the ALMS GT driver’s title
adding to the team trophy that was already secured by the AJR team.
The
race will be televised tomorrow, Sunday, on NBC starting at 2:00
p.m. EDT.
Timo
Bernhard, #23 McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex Job Racing/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: “It is great to be the GT driver’s champion.
I am sorry that Jorg can’t share it with me, but his support
throughout the year really helped me. It would have been nice to
win the race; we were the fastest car all day and really had a nice
lead until the rain. The car was handling great, there were no problems.
I will trade the winners trophy for the driver’s championship
trophy any day.”
Jorg
Bergmeister, #23 McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex Job Racing/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: “I played it safe today. Timo started the car
and was able to get a nice gap. I got in and kept the pace up and
wanted to give him a good car back for the finish. The rain came
and he wanted to protect the championship, I am very happy for him
and I was glad I was able to play a roll in his great year.”
Marc
Lieb, #24 McKenna/mail2web.com/Alex Job Racing/Porsche 911 GT3 RSR:
“Romain and I have had a roller coaster of a season. I was
gaining time on Timo during the last stint and then the rain came,
he pitted and we stayed out, took the lead and were able pit under
yellow for rains. The last couple of laps I just had to focus and
bring it home for the win. It was nice to have some good luck and
win the last race.”
Romain
Dumas, #24 McKenna/mail2web.com/Xybernaut/Alex Job Racing/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: “It was great to get our second win here today.
The car was great all day and then the luck that we didn’t
have all season finally showed up in the last 20-minutes of the
last race. The 23 car pitted too early, the yellow came and then
we pitted and that was the story. Marc did a good job to run the
last laps in the rain for the win.”
Alex
Job, team owner: “It was a perfect day for our two cars. Timo
and Jorg had the car to beat all day. Timo went out from the start
and ran hard running a safe gap with fast, consistent laps. He is
a deserving champion. Marc and Romain finally had things go there
way. They kept the pressure on Timo and Jorg and were in the right
place to take advantage of the brief rain period and win the race.”
