Alex Job Racing Finishes
Fifth and Tenth in GT2 at Laguna
Monterey,
Calif. - Alex Job Racing drivers Romain Dumas
and Timo Bernhard endured a tough race to finish fifth today at
the final round of the American Le Mans Series race run at Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca. Teammates Ian Baas and Darren Law capped a
difficult race for AJR finishing in tenth.
Starting from the GT2 pole position, Romain Dumas dropped back
to second on the first lap. The Frechman was able to come back
and take the lead on lap 32. Handing over to Timo Bernhard on lap
40, the German kept the lead and began to build on the gap to second.
On lap 70 Bernhard was coming down the hill and going for the apex
of turn nine, when the number 58 Aston Martin hit the AJR car sending
him into the sand trap, ending the duos championship hopes in a
cloud of dust. Bernhard was able to be extracated from the sand
and soldiered on to finish the day in fifth.
The plight
of the 24 car was shorter and more fatal. Darren Law started
the number 24/Alex Job Racing/ Bell Microproducts/ProVest/Porsche
911 RSR from the fourth row in GT2. Law was delivering consistent
lap times in the thick of the GT2 battle when on lap 30 he reported
smoke coming down the hill from the Cork Screw, he pitted with
oil coming from the engine area - day over.
Timo Bernhard, #23 Alex Job Racing/Hyatt/Bell Microproducts/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR, "I was leading the race! The Aston was
behind me, I saw him and then he decided to try and take me at
the apex of turn nine coming down the hill, a poor place to pass
and he hit me. That ended our championship hopes early. We had
a good car and Romain and I had the piece to win. It is tough
to end it that way."
Romain Dumas, #23 Alex Job Racing/Hyatt/Bell Microproducts/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: "Once more we were the fastest car and
we lose. It seems to be the story of our season. The car was
good, I didn't have a great start but was able to take the lead
and get a gap before I handed over to Timo. Timo was just taken
out by the Aston. He was just impatient and hit us, a bad move."
Darren Law, #24 Alex Job Racing/Bell Microproducts/ProVest/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: "There was no loss of power, I just smelled
and then saw smoke coming down the hill. I was close to pit lane
and pulled right in. Not sure what happened. It is a tough way
to end the season. Ian and I got the car working well this weekend
and the way things were happening on the track we could have
had a good finish."
Ian Baas, #24 Alex Job Racing/Bell Microproducts/ProVest/Porsche
911 GT3 RSR: "I put a lot of work into this weekend.
It is a difficult way to end the season. I wanted to finish the
year on a high-note instead of parked early. Just one of those
things that is not in control of us or the team."
Alex
Job, team owner: "The
Aston Martin ended our championship run. That is a tough way
to end it, by being punted by a car in another class that was
not leading or in the hunt for a championship. Timo and Romain
have been fast every race, but dumb luck kept them from the championship.
Darren and Ian's race didn't even get started. Unfortunately
we book-ended the season with difficult races."
Bernhard and Dumas finished the GT2 season with pole positions
at Mid-Ohio, Infineon, Portland , Road America , Mosport, Petit
Le Mans and Laguna Seca. They parlayed those poles into wins at
Mid-Ohio, Lime Rock, Infineon and Portland . The team also recorded
a pole and a GT2 class win at the Le Mans 24 Hours teamed with
